Today West Street and its neighbourhood are home to a large mixed community of all ages.

The West Street Neighbourhood Group, established in 2009, has done much to improve the area through dedicated fundraising.

South Street Park was developed from a bare patch of tarmac and a school playing field - and has an active Friends’ Group.

Pavements have been improved, trees and street planters have appeared and vibrant street art provides colour. The acta Centre (ex-YMCA) houses a community theatre plus a programme of social activities. And plans are in hand to re-instate a community space on the site of the United Reformed Church.

The Friends of Parson Street Railway Station have done much to improve the station and local travel opportunities. While the A38 traffic and many buses still use the street as a route into, out of and through the city,  you can enjoy multi-cultural food shops, and the 3 remaining pubs.

If you look hard enough you can just about see remnants of its proud past, and if you want to learn more visit the West Street Stories Facebook page, which has grown an archive of memories and photographs since 2016.
