In the 1800’s three schools served the West Street Neighbourhood, although we are told there was also a school started by the miners on the site of the then gospel church on West Street, later the United Reformed church.
The Church of England National School opened in 1837 at the junction with East Street, the British School on what was Back Lane - now British Road - opened in 1847, and South Street School opened in 1895. In 1925 the latter was organised into two separate schools - one for boys, one for girls.

These were amalgamated in 1983 into South Street Primary School, now Compass Point Primary.
A family unit was added, working with children and young families, which has developed into today’s Children’s Centre.
