At the beginning of the 1800’s Bedminster was a small rural town served by the parish church of St. John the Baptist; however, the population soon began to expand.
John Wesley had preached in Bedminster several times in the 1700’s and by 1809 the first Methodists met in a “dwelling house,” numbers increased and they built several chapels. The Baptists established their chapels and with the Congregational Church (later the United Reformed Church) and Mount Zion Chapel on Victor Road - both set up by the miners - Bedminster became a nonconformist stronghold.
Within walking distance there were also a Salvation Army Citadel, the Brethren Church Gospel Hall, Salem Chapel and Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Eventually the parish churches of St Pauls, St. Aldhelm’s, St. Dunstan’s and St Francis were also established.
